Bharath Hotel

  • Bharath Hotel is one of the wheelchair-friendly place in Kochi. Some other good hotels have ramps, but they are movable wooden ramps. So, there is a flurry of activity to locate and fix the ramp whenever a wheelchair-user lands up there. Some other places like the Music World on the M. G. Road are barrier-free by default. If you can successfully get on to footpath, then you can easily get into the place as there are no steps at the entrance.

  • The recently renovated Bharath Hotel has fixed ramps. You can easily get into the restaurant serving the famous traditional Kerala meal on plantain leaf. One can also use the elevator without much hassle to go to the top floors.

One just wishes that some thought should have been given to the fact that some wheelchair user would get excited hearing about the facilities and would want to try them out. The tables in the restaurant are arranged in such a way that you cannot place your wheelchair close to the table without being nuisance to the guests on the nearby tables. The best option is to make yourself comfortable in the passage.

I live and work in America...and I am sure you know that this country has a very strict accessibility code and it has to be followed to the dot.

When I came to India last year that was something I was looking for in all places I travelled and very sadly it is not well implemented. I wish We could do something similar...Knowing the red tape system in India I am sure it will be 100 years before anything is impelemented fully, but including it in our building codes might make the architects at least go 50%.

Anu: Thanks for dropping by. I know US is the heaven for the disabled. We also laws & Acts, but as usual they are bypassed. The situation in Mumbai, Delhi & Chennai is improving as far as accessibility is concerned. It'll take time to reach remote places, that is all.

Hi, just chanced upon your blog thru Sarah's. Good to hear about BTH's renovation which should set an example to other hotels

Came to your blog through 3inone's. I went to the BTH with my mother around 5 months back. She had comewith a walker. But they even had a wheelchair of their own there. She sat in the wheelchair for lunch. I thought it was quite convenient for her. But it's true that people rarely think about wheelchair users here.

Hiii!! I have been seeing ur Frenchie and moustache at many blogs I visit.. never found time to come 2 u earlier.. let me be honest// this world is such that we men go to females faster!!
    haha

But then I am not ashamed for that behaviour either.. God created us like that.. No shame in that! BUT YEAA! As long as I am human.. and look at all as equals.. hard to explain this apparent contradiction in a comment so I will just cut short..

And say that I came here.. and saw ur 3 blogs.. understood u.. and will come back again

Don't yout hink we should be doing something to make places more wheel chair friendly? I have given me food for thought..Parish.
I need to think this through...
Parish, is there any place you would love to visit but you can't because of inaccesibility for wheel chair users...(I mean places in cochin)
